Green Technologies Stocktake Study

South Africa’s transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy demands not only
accelerated deployment of commercially ready solutions but also strategic investment in
emerging technologies that can bridge the gap between current trajectories and national climate
commitments. The Green Technologies Stocktake Study, commissioned by the Technology
Innovation Agency (TIA) in collaboration with the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC),
provides a comprehensive mapping and prioritisation of low-carbon and climate-resilient
technologies across the energy, industry, transport, agriculture, water, and waste sectors.
The study builds on the PCC’s sectoral pathways for achieving South Africa’s 2030–2035
Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets and supports the country’s broader Just
Transition goals, ensuring that climate action delivers environmental sustainability, social equity,
and economic resilience. It aligns with the Department of Science and Innovation’s Decadal
Plan, which identifies energy innovation, climate change and environmental
sustainability, and the circular economy as national priorities.
