On the 10th and 11th of February 2026, the Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency (MGCA) in collaboration with the JUST SA team set off to begin with implementation of the anticipated SME Loop in Mpumalanga, Middelburg. The SME Business & Coaching Loop (“SME Loop”) is a systematic capacity development measure for providing structured training and coaching support to SMMEs.

The overall objective of the onboarding workshop was to prepare implementing partners for the implementation of the SME Loop course in Mpumalanga. This was achieved through the support of an Enterprise Masterclass Coach who kicked off the workshop by presenting field trip findings and positioning the SME Loop in Mpumalanga.
The workshop consisted of exercises which allowed participants opportunity to immerse themselves into the roles of being trainers/ coaches creating for a richer experience. Through these exercises, participants critically discussed complex scenarios such as:
- Positioning the Loop in MP as a complementary tool.
- Problem solving for already existing SMEs.
- Analysing eligibility criteria.
- Exclusion criteria.
- Growth indicators.

Additionally, the workshop content looked at different sectors as a criterion to select SMEs from. While also delving into already practical examples to explore in Mpumalanga and discussions of the actual Loop Course structure.
A constant aspect which proved to be a challenge worth digging into was the limited exposure of opportunities women have due to land issues and socio-economic challenges. This would require more innovation and involvement in other sectors apart from the agricultural sector (which is where women are more prominent). This remains a gap worth attempting to close through green, innovative ideas.
To close off the two-day workshop, we looked at practical next steps which were adopted by all participants resulting in a successful onboarding workshop. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates on this exciting initiative!
