The two-day Just Transition training in the Northern Cape kicked off with an insightful first day. Attendance exceeded expectations, bringing together a diverse mix of participants from the Premier’s Office, DEDAT, DFFE, the Provincial Legislature, and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism. Local government was also strongly represented, with colleagues from Sol Plaatje, ZF Mgcawu, Pixley ka Seme, Kgatelopele, and Frances Baard municipalities in the room.
For some attendees, this was their first encounter with the concept of a “just transition.” The conversations that followed highlighted how important and urgent the work done by JUST SA is for the province.

A few key reflections from Day 1:
• Peer learning stood out. The diversity of participants in the room created a dynamic space where the training team wasn’t the only source of answers, but knowledge-sharing flowed amongst attendees in the room.
• The Northern Cape’s vulnerability assessment is striking. Participants were concerned by the provincial climate vulnerability assessment because without a properly managed and just transition, almost a third of GDP and a quarter of jobs in the province (mainly in agriculture and metals mining), is at risk.
• Green economy / just transition policy confidence varies across levels of government, revealing a gap that needs bridging.

Day 2 was filled with more engagement, group activities and presentations by participants. Certificates were handed out and pictures taken. Northern Cape was great to engage with.

The diversity of contributions reminded us that a just transition must be shaped inclusively, and defined by all of us, for all of us. May the momentum we built together carry forward into bold, collaborative action for a just and sustainable future in the Northern Cape.
