And so the Loop Begins!

Mpumalanga sits at the heart of South Africa's coal economy, and as the Just Energy Transition reshapes the province, its small businesses are being asked to adapt, diversify and grow. The MSME Loop is an initiative offering a structured training and coaching programme that helps operational, growth-oriented MSMEs build stronger, greener, more resilient businesses.

Since its launch earlier this year, the programme has moved steadily from design into delivery. Here's where the journey stands, and where it's headed next.

The MSME Loop began with an onboarding workshop that brought together key stakeholders, including the Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency, the DFFE, local Business Development experts, community members, as well as Local Economic Development officers from the region’s municipal offices. They came together to align on the programme's purpose, structure and shared goals and that lead to a shared foundation that has set the stage for the next critical step: building the capacity to deliver the programme.

In June, the team ran a two-week Training of Trainers (ToT), equipping selected municipal LED officers and local BDS trainers with the tools and methodology behind the globally tested MSME Loop approach: covering business diagnostics, coaching techniques and business development planning. With the trainers (and coaches) ready, the programme has now kicked off its first rounds of MSME training, bringing the Loop methodology directly to entrepreneurs across the province.

Before any training could begin, the programme needed the right businesses in the room. A call for applications was issued across the project's networks and on social media and the response made the need for this kind of support immediately clear: over 800 applications poured in from across the province, a strong signal of just how much demand there is among Mpumalanga's small business owners for structured, hands-on support to grow and green their operations.

From that pool, selection was competitive and criteria-driven. The programme prioritises:

- Operational businesses already generating sales and not pre-startups or businesses without a trading history

- Growth-ready entrepreneurs with the potential and ambition to scale

- Green and environmentally responsible businesses, aligned with sustainable practices, local value chains, climate-resilient services and economic diversification in Mpumalanga

- Women- and youth-led enterprises, were strongly encouraged to apply

Applicants were assessed against operational status, growth potential, commitment, and market readiness. The programme is designed to reach 200 enterprises across Mpumalanga by the time the full rollout is complete.

Over the coming months, the MSME Loop will move deeper into delivery. Having completed their Business Diagnostic Training, participating MSMEs will progress into continuous coaching cycles with weekly and bi-weekly sessions designed to help them get to grips with their real business numbers, sharpen their costing and pricing, and strengthen their marketing and customer strategies. This will be followed by Business Development Planning, where each business builds a practical improvement plan geared toward measurable revenue growth and job creation, and Access to Finance Facilitation, connecting participants with financial institutions to strengthen their readiness for investment. As the first cohort moves through its 6-month cycle, the programme will also begin preparing and selecting subsequent batches, steadily building toward its goal of supporting 200 green MSMEs across Mpumalanga
