Garth Barnes

Programme Manager: Water and Biodiversity

Before employment at the NBI as Programme Manager: Water and Biodiversity, Garth spent 8 years in the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. Here he generated and implemented advocacy strategies for various programmes of government and where he worked to catalyse strategic partnerships with other government departments, spheres of government and private sector companies for invasive alien biomass value chain beneficiation.

Prior to that Garth has held middle to senior management positions in corporate and non-governmental organisations respectively across a broad range of sustainability subjects, water and biodiversity included. He also served as a trustee of the South African Wetland Society and was a founding Board member of the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA).

Garth holds a graduate diploma in Marketing Management, a degree in Environmental Management and a Master of Education (with distinction) with specialisation in water stewardship from Rhodes University.
